General information on ticks:
Ticks are most active in the warm months from May to August. From this time on, every dog and cat owner should be equipped with a suitable instrument to safely remove ticks. Ticks mainly live in the low herbaceous layer of meadows, in undergrowth, and at forest edges. To reach their hosts, they crawl up to about one meter high on blades of grass or in bushes. From there, they drop or brush off onto passing animals or people, whom they perceive with the help of heat and chemical stimuli. Ticks can transmit dangerous pathogens. However, these must first multiply in the tick during a blood meal before they can be transmitted to the pet with the tick's saliva. So, if ticks are removed a few hours after attaching, there is a good chance of protecting the animal from infection. When removing them, the following points should be observed:
- Do not drip oil, glue, or similar substances on the tick.
- Grasp the tick's head as close to the skin as possible with special tick tweezers and twist or pull out the tick as a whole.
- Do not press on the tick's body.
- Then disinfect the bite site with a suitable wound ointment.
